The Huge Crater Has Become an Exotic Highland: Dieng Plateau

The highest highland in the world is Tibetan Plateau. The average elevation is over 4,500 meters, and all 14 of the world's 8000 meters and higher peaks are found in this region. Sometimes it called "the roof of the world," it is also the biggest plateau in the world with an area of 2.5 million square kilometers, about four times the size of France country (Wikipedia).

But, did you know what is the second highest plateau? Yes it is. The second highest plateau in the world is Dieng Plateau. It's located in the regions of Wonosobo and Banjarnegara, Central Java, Indonesia. It is about 134 kilometers from Adisucipto International Airport, Yogyakarta.

The Dieng Village

Indeed, Dieng plateau is a caldera surrounded by mountains as the edges. This huge caldera formed from a great mountain which was erupted very powerful millions years ago. The peak of this big mountain itself has been crushed because of it eruption.

In Dieng, there are two villages which administratively includes at this area; Dieng Kulon village, subdistrict of Batur, Banjarnegara region and Dieng Wetan village, subdistrict of Kejajar, region of Wonosobo.

This tourist area is verry interesting for honey moon tours, as is so quiet and cold. That is many Japanese and Koreans really likes the place such as this to enjoy the honeymoon here.

Just like Mount Agung in Bali and Mount Bromo in Probolinggo, this highland is thick with religious ambience. At the Plateau located eight small Hindus temples.

The temples was built around 750 CE. These are the oldest known standing stone structures in Java. Originally, these temples are thought to have numbered of 400 temples but now only 8 remain.

As a volcano complex, the volcanic activity under Dieng floor is very high. So, there are found many craters that are still active. At February, 20 1979, Sinila crater, one of the big craters, has erupted and trigger to pull out poisonous gasses from Timbang crater. A number of residents (149 people) and cattle was died because was poisoned with the carbon dioxide gas that was released.

Telaga Warna

Besides of that, there are also found many volcanic lakes. The lakes formed from dead crater. As a result, the lakes has colorful scene that is vary with shades of color of red, green, blue, white, and violet. One of the pretty lake known as Telaga Warna (Bahasa Indonesia), meant Lake Color.
